Pauline Hanson demands politicians take pay cut in coronavirus crisis
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8163723/Pauline-Hanson-demands-politicians-pay-cut-coronavirus-crisis.html

It is a shame that major newspapers did not report Pauline Hanson had demanded that politicians to take pay cut during the coronavirus crisis.

She may not be academically qualified like most MPs, and her speeches are not that polished, but she always speaks intensely and with conviction.

What she says most of the time may not be politically correct PC, but hiding behind PC makes one a hypocrite, and defeats the principle of free speech and expression.

I was not a fan of Pauline Hanson at the beginning, but she has “matured” politically, and she even served time in jail. She can speak more clearly now than PM Morrison, who keeps beating around the bush, delivering confusing messages and makes a mockery of himself.

For people who were still actively working full time or part time, and business operators, they are getting assistance from the government. Spare a thought for those self-funded retirees whose hard earned money in superannuation funds and term deposits have plummeted so much, and can no longer support until whatever they have budgeted for.

This Coronavirus pandemic creates not just financial depression, but also a bigger one known as mental depression.

One controversial aspect of Trump's response to COVID-19 is right

No country paid a damn when China locked down Wuhan, but condemned the government as heavy handed.

“... had Chinese authorities acted three weeks sooner to declare what was known about the virus, global pandemic cases could have been reduced by 95 per cent.” This is total rubbish and the author is off the rocker, because 95% will not withstand even the simplest test in any mathematical modelling.

Today marks the end of 3 months since Chinese revealed the discovery of the deadly virus. Has US locked down all the states to curb the spreading? Instead the country take the guernsey in the number of infection cases and fatality.

According to Wikipedia, “To maintain morale, World War I censors minimized early reports of illness and mortality in Germany, the United Kingdom, France, and the United States.”, and sadly, “Historian Alfred W. Crosby stated in 2003 that the flu originated in Kansas, and popular author John M. Barry described a January 1918 outbreak in Haskell County, Kansas, as the point of origin in his 2004 article.”

It is naive for some countries, especially the US led by President Donald Trump, to say “... calling coronavirus the 'Chinese virus' is 'not racist at all’”.

The author of this article is inciting racial divide. He is incorrect to even think that calling the controversial aspect of Trump's response to COVID-19 is right, that is calling the coronavirus as “Chinese virus”.

Fate of Chinese Medical Mission Stirs Controversy in Algeria

Fate of Chinese Medical Mission Stirs Controversy in Algeria
https://aawsat.com/english/home/article/2207201/fate-chinese-medical-mission-stirs-controversy-algeria

Chatted via Messenger with a member from Algeria, in North Africa, sharing boundary in the west to northwest with Morocco.

At present, the number of cases stands at 511, and 31 deaths.

The following is an edited version of translation using Google translate from French to English.

The schools and the universities are closed, but the factories are open. Women who have children and people who have chronic disease do not go to work.

At the beginning, people stocked up on food, because they were all afraid.

Imagine even people who work in the pharmacy and the hospital do not have masks and gloves! Our Executive Council of Béjaïa signed an agreement with private companies at Béjaïa Province to manufacture the masks.

The government helps people in other continent but not its own.

We are grateful that China help us by sending a team of doctors and equipment to the military hospital in Algiers, to treat those diagnosed with the disease.

We have one institute, Pasteur Institute, in Algiers which oversees 45 provinces, and the test results take a long time to return (it uses PCR as a diagnostic mean).

The majority of coronavirus cases are Imported from Europe. It is too late to close the border to stop the spreading.

Thank you.

German state finance minister Thomas Schäfer found dead

German state finance minister Thomas Schäfer found dead
https://www.dw.com/en/german-state-finance-minister-thomas-sch%C3%A4fer-found-dead/a-52948976

The Finance Minister died by suicide, with his body found next to a train track by the police.

This will not be an isolated case, and there are a lot more high profile will soon be joining the list. All the years of hardwork and some have gathered their wealth through generations may lose everything caused by the pandemic.

While physical health can be detected more easily, mental health has a greater impact and to a great extent, it is a silent killer.

The pandemic causes depression on two fronts - financial and health.

Please keep your chin up, stay sane. Most importantly stay home.

Confusing messages from the Prime Minister and Premier

Confusing messages from the Prime Minister and Premier

I am more and more confused with what the PM and Premier are talking about

How can I "sit" down with my tenants to discuss about rent issue if I am supposed to stay at home?
What are the banks going to do with my investment loan interest?
How can a shop operate with only 2 people in a "gathering"?

Business hibernation?
How can a restaurant kitchen operate with only 2 people?
Should the public transport stopped altogether? What about the train and plane?

So it is OK for most people to go insane privately, but some have to deal with it publicly. Is it?

Use the double 4-letter words, lockdown, to avoid further confusion NOW!

5 reasons the coronavirus hit Italy so hard

5 reasons the coronavirus hit Italy so hard
https://theconversation.com/5-reasons-the-coronavirus-hit-italy-so-hard-134636

At this point in time, more than 2,000 people in the United States infected with the coronavirus have died, while in Italy, more than 10,000 people.

There are 5 reasons the coronavirus hit Italy so hard

1. Lots of old people
In 2018, 22.6% of its population was 65 or over, among the highest proportions in Europe, while Australia is 15.7%.

2. Close proximity
Hugs and cheek-kisses are common not just among family members but also friends and even work colleagues.

3. Dense population
Italy has an average density of 533 people per square mile, while the U.S. has 94.. However, it is nowhere close to Singapore - 21,646 people per mile.

4. Northern Italy is a business hub
Milan, in northern Italy, is the country’s financial capital, and has close trade and educational connections with China.

5. Massive number of cases
With far fewer people, Italy’s infection rate is much higher than China’s.

Coronavirus confusion Chinese masks for Italy end in Czech Republic

Coronavirus confusion Chinse masks for Italy end in Czech Republic

Yesterday I communicated via Messenger with a FB friend, a resident from Rome and currently staying in Austria to look after her 90 year old mother while the pandemic is on. The city is in lockdown, schools and universities are shut down. Workers do not get paid or receive any assistance from the government.

Her neighbour and friends in Rome are fine, staying at home. For those with a garden, they can catch up with some spring gardening. Some of them reckon the large number of infections in Italy is due to Italians go out to coffee several times a day, and kiss each other on the right and left cheeks.

Austria donated 300,000 masks to China at the start of coronavirus outbreak, and in return for such gesture, China sent 600,000 masks and other medical equipment to Austria.

As for the linked article, I don't intend to comment on or speculate about how masks donated by China to Italy ended in Czech Republic.

I like to get actual account from people living overseas. It is difficult to authenticate information from secondary source.

Worse since 1932: Two million Aussies face employment

Worse since 1932: Two million Aussies face employment
https://www.theage.com.au/politics/federal/worst-since-1932-two-million-aussies-face-unemployment-queue-20200323-p54d14.html

This blog is originally published in SFC Coronavirus COVID-19 News & Articles
I am very vocal and I really don’t like a lot of the interviewers and interviewing techniques used by the employment agency consultants, HR representatives and potential employers.

The terminologies used are no more than jargons, and normally fairly new in the vocabulary. Unless the job seekers have just finished a management course in tertiary education, there is a Buckley’s chance that they can understand what they interviewers are talking about.

One typical example is about being a team player. Without having worked in that specific company or organisation, how does one know about it’s team dynamics, and therefore whether one can fit in.

Then there are words like hard skills and soft skills.

Some of the advertisements are just plain ridiculous and expect too much. Unfortunately, these are written just as a formality, because the position is meant for someone awaits to be promoted internally but due to organisation policies that the position has to be advertised externally.

Cities go into lockdown, and many businesses especially fashion, hospitality, entertainment, motor vehicle and tourism and all related industries will close for good. No one has ever imagined such a disaster can ever happen leading to depression.
No one knows when this pandemic will end, and how much longer can any government pour money in to support the businesses, workers who have been stood down and casual workers who could not find work to subsidise their income. Many businesses may not survive and even if there is a restart button, some businesses will take much longer to rebuild.

Those unemployed former employment consultants, HR experts and business owners will be queuing up to compete with a lot of others. These people will understand some of prejudices they had before, and how difficult is to be across am interviewing panel bombarded with questions only the quick minded can handle.

The negative impact of this disastrous pandemic on private schools is more visible than the public sector. I did challenge the usefulness of the lush green carpet grass school field, swimming pool, gymnasium, posh canteen, etc. These do not come into the equation of education system proper.

For those loyal followers of my real estate blogs, you probably have heard enough about ny asking you to save, save and save for rainy days, and never jump in to invest on negatively geared properties. I think my advice is spot on.

My prediction about the negative impact on the real estate industry has come true. Auctions and property inspection are halted during the current state of emergency and the imposition of self-distancing rule on public gathering.

After all that being said, do not get disappointed, disillusion and get yourself into a state of depression. You have a lot of spare time, and use this time wisely to self-improve yourself, not only in terms of knowledge, but also outlook in life. This is also the time to reconsider your next career path.

In one of my blogs, I explained economy will stay stagnant if money does not flow by changing hand. Until consumer confidence returns, that is when people perceive to have financial stability again, money will be saved rather than spent.
The economic recovery takes time, and you must remain strong, physically and mentally.

Italian doctors saw 'strange pneumonia' in Lombardy in November
https://www.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/3076334/coronavirus-strange-pneumonia-seen-lombardy-november-leading

It is mind boggling that Lombardy of Northern Italy could be the place where coronavirus originated.

Giuseppe Remuzzi, the director of the Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research in Milan, said in an interview that some general practitioners remembered seeing very strange pneumonia, particularly severe in old people in November.

Remuzzi said it was only recently that he had heard from Italian doctors about the disease, which meant it had existed and been spreading without people’s knowledge.

According to a report from China, the first Chinese case might have been as early as mid-November.

Some tips for lonely people to keep sane during lockdown

Most of the time, many people are alone even their spouse or partner is in the same house. They do not talk to each other, and eat together.

There are so many things one can do when alone. As you know, I blog a lot. Before I blog, I have to read and research. Time just flies pass.

This is the time for self-improvement. There is so much you can explore and learn from web sites around the world.

Many people, single or otherwise, are in the same situation, feeling lonely and wish to have a chat. I spent about an hour voice chatting with a FB friend from the US, whom I have never met, using Messenger early this morning.

A few days ago, I had a message chat via Messenger with another another FB friend from Morocco, whom I have never met, exchanging news about the current situation.

Turn your virtual friends from FB into real friends, with sound and character.

I hope I have given all the single people or lonely people some tips to keep yourself sane. You may be a better and wiser person after this testing period.

China Sends Masks, Gloves and Test Kits to Nations Affected by COVID-19

China Sends Masks, Gloves and Test Kits to Nations Affected by COVID-19
https://time.com/5807710/china-sends-medical-supplies-coronavirus/

I have written many times that I have no intention to talk about other governments and discuss foreign politics. However, I am deeply saddened by a FB post, critising China’s goodwill and in the meantime accusing China hoarding masks.

This is not the time to speculate and be suspicious of what China is doing with the masks. If China saves the masks for her own people, what’s wrong with it? It is the prerogative of the Chinese government to give or not to give. Charity starts from home, doesn’t it?

There is nothing more important than saving lives and staying alive.

Throughout history, China under the rule of Chinese emperors, China neither conquered nor occupied any foreign country. Yuan and Qing emperors were Mongolian and Manchurian respectively.

China established the Silk Road, not for wars but trade. During the Ming Dynasty, China sent the envoys to Southeast Asia, and other nearby countries for trade, not wars.

Chinese invented gun power for peace time use, and produced fireworks for celebration of happy and even sad moments, but never as firepower. China was defeated by canons and guns of the Western inventions using the gun powder, invented by the Chinese, during the Qing Dynasty.

There is a Chinese proverb, “Never expect any reward when helping someone; do not offer help if expecting a reward in return.”

Please note that this is not a propaganda. I only want people of this world, especially members of this group, not to live their daily lives wearing coloured glasses. We must live as one in peace, not with suspicion.

Bondi Beach beachgoers removed by police as restrictions enforced amid coronavirus crisis
https://www.theage.com.au/politics/federal/unacceptable-health-minister-blasts-beachgoers-amid-coronavirus-crisis-20200321-p54chw.html

This is another example of idiotic people not taking heed of the dangerous situation they are in. If they die of infection, it’s perfectly fine with me, but unfortunately they are potential human coronavirus terrorists, attempted to spread the deadly diseases to the community, to cause maximum damage and fatality.

What has the City Council and the State Government do? Nothing. Their indifference is so deafening, and I would like to see the citizens of the state take up class action against these hopeless bodies, should the number of infections increases due to the defiance of the beach goers.

It is proven time and time again social distancing is the cheapest and best way to prevent the spread of coronavirus. In short, the council and the government ignore the duty of care and therefore liable for civil actions.

Is this a proof that Australia has literacy problem?

A FB member messaged me a news articles about people still rush in to buy properties. He wondered whether it is panic buying or panic selling?

I replied it was a matter of stupidity, and explained as follows:

Most of the young buyers are financed by Mum and Dad bank. Unfortunately many of the seniors do not realise their superannuation funds and bank interests are so badly eroded that their money is dwindling.

Even high income buyers, like all those ignoring the self-isolation order, ignore the signs of doom, may not have a job to go back to in a few months time.

Paying the deposit is only the start of their nightmare.

The science of soap – here’s how it kills the coronavirus
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/mar/12/science-soap-kills-coronavirus-alcohol-based-disinfectants

A science student from Malaysia asked me about soap and its effectiveness in killing the coronavirus.

Here you are, the article explains how soap “kills” the coronavirus more cheaply and effectively. You really don’t need the sanitiser unless you are not within reach of soap.

Coronavirus consists of three key building blocks: ribonucleic acid (RNA), proteins and lipids.

When you touch a surface with a virus particle on it, it will stick to your skin and hence get transferred on to your hands.

Washing the virus off with water alone might work, but soap in soapy water contains fat-like substances known as amphiphiles, some of them structurally simialr to the lipids of the virus membrane, will loosen the bond between the virus and the skin as well as the bond that holds the proteins, lipids and RNA in the virus together.

Australia faces being locked down suburb by suburb

Australia faces being locked down suburb by suburb
https://www.theage.com.au/politics/federal/australia-faces-being-locked-down-suburb-by-suburb-20200320-p54cba.html

Am I a worrier or just one of my gifts that think of all worse case scenarios about what can happen if I am imprisoned in my own house one day?

I blog a lot (refer to my SFC Real Estate News and Articles) advising readers to buy landed property instead of apartment as an investment option. In fact, it is worse if one choose to live in an apartment, even if it is a lifestyle choice.

Many downsizes choose to live in apartment because it is compact and easy to maintain. Unless it is a reasonable size apartment, the confined space may not be ideal if one is locked in and cannot get out to the open to appreciate that sense of “freedom”.

The coronavirus pandemic causes many countries to lock down, and residents are not allowed to get out of the dwelling.

In my early days, I always chose to live in a house with a backyard in own enclosed compound, no matter how small it was. Another criterion was to have additional space internally, so that I would be just moving between my room and just the kitchen. Oh yes, the kitchen must have a door, and should be just as big or may be slightly smaller than a smallest bedroom in the house.

I probably will go bonkers if the suburban lockdown is to take effect. Fortunately, I have many hobbies and interest keep me going, but I can also stretch my arms and legs in my garden, or when I feel like releasing my frustration of the entrapment, I can just unforgivingly pull the weeds in the garden beds or walk paths.

My home is my castle. It has protective external walls, but I do like to get out of the front door or back door from time to time to breathe in fresh air and listen to the chirping of the birds. Have I told you I have a pond full of gold fish (carp). It is so relaxing to watch them gulping down the fish pellets I throw in during their dinner time.

Younger adults are a large percentage of coronavirus hospitalisations in US, Europe, data shows

Most children are shorter than adults, and the chances they “catch” or inhale the droplets of saliva expel from an infected are slimmer. Even so, the droplets from coughs are propelled forward rather than downward, and therefore the number of droplets fallen is substantially less than direct face-to-face contact at the same height.

After that being said, if an infected child is to “socialise” with other children, the child is likely to infect them. Despite the government and health authority directives not to close school, concerned parents are wise to enforce the social distancing rule by not allowing their children to attend school.

Now that the proof is out that the younger people are just as vulnerable to be infected, we can only hope that universities and colleges will not become clusters of infection.

'Sacrificial lambs': Teachers plead for coronavirus shutdown
https://www.theage.com.au/national/victoria/sacrificial-lambs-teachers-plead-for-coronavirus-shutdown-20200319-p54bui.html

I think the school children's hands do not need much cleaning, but the heads of the Victorian Education Minister James Merlino, Chief Health Officers, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews, and Prime Minister Scott Morrison's do, and require proper sanitization as well.

These are real stubborn mules, much worse than the UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson who was a staunch believer of Herd Immunity concept, but eventually came to his senses to close all schools.

The reason the number of infected children in China, including school students, was small is due the prompt action taken to lock down the cities, that resulted in school closure.

It is commonsense that cannot get through the thick skulls of the people mentioned above. The school closure minimises the coronavirus spread!

Almost all children are shorter than adults, and even at close contact, they are not at the height level to "catch" or inhale the droplets of saliva that might contain the virus expel from the adults.

I strongly believe that all schools must be shut down immediately. For goodness sake, do not repeat the debacle of the Grand Prix cancellation.

Britain shuts down all schools amid coronavirus pandemic

Why, why, why? No matter how many toilet rolls I use, I still can’t wipe off the shit from Morrison and federal and state Chief Health Officers.

It is just impossible to distant oneself from the students. Recently, the primary school I volunteered in had a fire drill, and the students filed very orderly to an assembly area. I believe there were more than 500 students and staff combined. Doesn’t this break the law of having a gathering of more than 500 people in the open?

This is a very stressful time for the teachers, not knowing who they are dealing with. Are the schools strict enough to test the temperature of every student and teacher arriving at school? What if a teacher is infected by a student or students at school? Can the teacher sue the government for negligence and duty of care?

How are countries "flattening the curve" of coronavirus?

How are countries "flattening the curve" of coronavirus?
https://www.theage.com.au/national/how-are-countries-flattening-the-curve-of-coronavirus-20200317-p54b3g.html

What is “flattening the curve”? Flattening the curve means slowing how fast the virus moves through the community. The whole idea is to slow down the number of cases below the healthcare system capacity.

The number of cases over a period of time be represented by a curve. The top of the curve is known as the peak.

The rate (or how fast) of increase or decrease is reflected by the steepness of the curve. The steeper the curve moves upwards means the number is increasing more rapidly, and downwards indicates the contrary.

When the number increases very rapidly in a short space of time, it is normally described as increasing exponentially.

The article gives a very detailed explanations of how the curve can be flattened, to allow some breathing space for the doctors, economies (and vaccine-makers) to deal with the spread of the virus.

I shall explain more about other terms in my future blogs.

Australia needs to go hard and fast to tackle coronavirus
https://www.theage.com.au/national/australia-needs-to-go-hard-and-fast-to-tackle-coronavirus-20200317-p54b2k.html

This article resonates what I have been critising the governments and medical officers for their indecisiveness and unclear advice that confuse the public.

If social distancing is to be enforced, where are there queues at supermarket check outs, ticketing machines, bus/tram stops and train stations, canteens?

Further to that argument, why are schools remained open? Students are in enclosed areas for hours. How can a teacher show a student how to fix a problem if the teacher is 1.5m away instead of sitting next the student? Are there any group assignments and discussions?

I wonder how a traveller cope upon arrival in Australia and goes straight into self-isolation. That was my reason for abandoning my overseas holiday plan, because I have no idea to fill my stomach during my quarantine period.

This is a very interesting article illustrating the effectiveness of social distancing. The article shows 4 stimulations and the results of using a random sample of population.

1. A sample of a population without social distancing
2. Same sample of a population with social distancing
3. Using only one quarter of the sample of the population without social distancing
4. Using only one quarter of the sample of the population with social distancing

Mounting worries that Indonesia could be next hot spot if coronavirus hits lower class

Mounting worries that Indonesia could be next hot spot if coronavirus hits lower class
https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/se-asia/mounting-worries-that-indonesia-could-be-next-hot-spot-if-coronavirus-hits-lower-class

Indonesia is a close neighbour of Australia and it claimed at one stage had no infection.

Unfortunately good time does not last, and it has confirmed 172 cases and five deaths due to the virus as of Tuesday (March 17).

It is concerning that these numbers are well below the actual cases due to under-detection. These reported numbers are from the middle class and up, who have travelled overseas, or in contact with people who have travelled overseas.

If infections reach the densely-populated areas, lower class or slums, there will be a spike in infections, and become unmanageable because most people in the streets say they don't know and don't care about coronavirus.

This is just the beginning for Indonesia. It is unimaginable how this can impact on Australia infection cases if the government does not take more stringent action to limit Australians travelling to Indonesia proper, not just Bali. They may become carriers upon their return.

Indonesia is going to be the next hot spot and the spread of the virus can exceed that of Italy and US.

'Herd immunity': Why Britain is actually letting the coronavirus spread

'Herd immunity': Why Britain is actually letting the coronavirus spread
https://www.theage.com.au/world/europe/herd-immunity-why-britain-is-actually-letting-the-coronavirus-spread-20200315-p54a5h.html

What is Boris Johnson‘s government herd immunity approach? Is it crazy?

Herd immunity approach has three core elements: enact social distancing measures much more slowly than other countries; shield at-risk groups like the elderly and sick from contact with the general population; and then let COVID-19 slowly sweep through everybody else.

Well, it sounds reasonable, but politically unpalatable to the citizens of UK.

The number of infections are increasing rapidly in UK, and people with mild symptoms are asked to undertake self-isolation, but they are not required to be tested for infection. However, if one person in any household starts to display symptoms, everyone living there must stay at home for 14 days.

What this means the reported number of cases is rubbery, and the risk is high when travelling to UK.

On 16 March, the total number of people in the UK to test positive for the virus has risen by 171 in a day to a total of 1,543.

Emergency flights authorized after Morocco flight ban

Emergency flights authorized after Morocco flight ban
https://edition.cnn.com/travel/article/coronavirus-morocco-flights-canceled/index.html

My decision to cancel going to Morocco is a wise one. To get to Morocco, I have to fly to Doha, then wait for a few hours to board another plane to Morocco. Spending so many hours in the plane, tired and with jet lag, the body defence system is weakened and a good chance to ask for trouble.

After a land tour in Morocco, the journey will continue on a cruise along British Isle.

This is one reason, but not the major one. The idea of going on a vacation is to relax and enjoy, not to worry about who is standing next to me, whether to hold on to the rail when coming down stairs or on a escalator, run away from a crowd when someone starts to cough, wonder the hygiene standard of the staff handling the food, etc. I shall go bonkers.

The psychological torture is still not the determining factor. So what is?

What if the restaurants or tourist places are closed? Most importantly, if the city is locked down, I shall be stuck in a foreign country not knowing what to expect next. How do I go to the next destination? Worse still, I may not be allowed to enter to another country. If I miss the next destination, it literally means I shall miss the boat.

There are two other considerations. Will I be allowed to leave from the last place I visited back to Australia during a lockdown? Will Australia allow me to get back in? Well, the 14 days of self-isolation is the least of my concern, because I shall stock up before I leave home, just in case.

Am I a pessimistic worrier? No, I am not. When I made up my mind, Italy was not in complete lockdown, the Grand Prix was not cancelled, Morocco was not in any way in a panic state, many European countries had not closed their borders, and Victoria had not been declared in a State of Emergency.

I communicated via Messenger with one of latest members in the group, a medical doctor from Morocco, she said the number of infection was increasing. As the article pointed out, the number had risen to 18, and no more international flights from to to the airports. She was afraid, and worried about the spread of the disease had become pandemic.

Please be very careful, and avoid crowd. Try not to talk with anyone face-to-face directly. If possible, do not line up in a queue, that includes queuing at a check out.

https://www.theage.com.au/national/victoria/mass-confusion-classrooms-thin-out-as-parents-pull-kids-from-school-20200316-p54aly.html

This is why I am so dissatisfied with the state Government and Chief Medical Officer of their wish-washy instructions and indecision in closing the schools.

The number of deaths caused by the COVID-19 has been estimated by some experts to be between 50,000 and 150,000. Why don’t theses procrastinating pendulums just call the shot to close down the schools now, just like the Grand Prix?
